In 2023, Andrea Huelin entered the Archibald Prize for the first time with a portrait of Cal Wilson, called ‘Clown jewels’. What followed was a career-defining experience marked by extraordinary opportunity and unexpected grief.

In this candid artist talk, Andrea Huelin shares the story behind the portrait, the experience of exhibiting in one of Australia’s most celebrated art prizes, and the emotional impact of losing Cal Wilson shortly after completing the work. Through stories and reflections, Andrea offers a rare glimpse into the world of the Archibald Prize while exploring portraiture, creativity, and resilience.

About the Artist

Andrea Huelin is a Melbourne-based painter known for portraits and observational works that elevate the overlooked details of everyday life. Her work explores memory, attention and the emotional texture of ordinary experience with warmth, wit and psychological insight. She has been exhibited in the Archibald Prize, the Lester Prize and the Salon des Refusés.
